I bought this frame for one purpose: my sister and I have Smugmug accounts and we wanted our parents to have a frame that would automatically display new pictures when we posted them to our accounts. I tried several other frames and none could do this well.

The Viewsonic was easy to set up. Turn it on and the setup wizard begins - configuring your wifi connection. It worked with my (WPA2-PSK) secured wifi. Then I went online and signed up for a free FrameChannel account. The navigation of FrameChannel takes a while to get used to, but all the functionality is there.

I added the RSS feeds from the Smugmug galleries I wanted my parents to see. Then I went back to the frame and found (easily) in the menu where I would configure the FrameChannel account. This involved putting in my user name and a PIN code from the FrameChannel site.

Once this initial setup was done I went (on the frame) to "Pictures" --> "Frame Channel" and pressed the slide show button on the remote. Within a few seconds the first picture from my gallery displayed. It was a little slow, as the pictures were being downloaded by the frame, but there were not any errors. The quality on the display was good, not great, as colors were a bit washed out but the pictures were clear and not grainy.

It's great that I can add and remove RSS feeds to the frame on the FrameChannel site so that my parents never have to fool with that part and they will always have new pictures. I did send the frame in for an exchange because there was a piece of dirt under the glass that was visible in many of the pictures. It wasn't a major problem but did affect viewing so I've exchanged it for a unit that (hopefully) is free from defects.

This works excellently for my purposes and I'm glad to have found a reasonably-priced model that does.

Bought this to use in our local Chamber of Commerce Attractions Board as a digital "billboard". They recommended this particular model as it fits their display windows and they have experience working with them, but having used it now would have purchased this one over other models. Didn't read the directions and it was still fairly straight forward on how to load images, which it has multiple options for various platforms. Works well with our Macs. Only down side I saw was that it wasn't possible to edit the timing of the slideshow (i.e., have images stay up for "x" seconds), but that wasn't a deal breaker. For the Amazon price, well worth it.

I really liked it. Great resolution, multiple interfaces.

The Coby 8" played the JPEGs great. MP3s played excellent. Inserting the files were easy and the remote was a perfect addition to this unit. Sound quality was surprisingly good. I liked everything about this unit. Then came the video. The MPEGs, AVI and MPEG4 files were recognized by the unit, they began to play then the screen froze. The audio would continue to play but the video would play, then stop, play a little more, then stop. I tried a smaller file size, higher/lower quality video, AVI, MPEG4 and even tried different software to convert the video to MPEG and AVI. I tried everything but nothing worked and yes, all videos played flawlessly on my computer. Unfortunately, I bought this unit because it had video playback. I'm very disappointed as this was a Xmas gift to my dad. I've returned the unit and hopefully the next one will work as advertised. I will get back to you about the next one. Amazon was excellent in all areas reguarding the service they provide. I would buy through Amazon again with no worries.

Pictures need to be reconfigured to a 16x9 before they are put on the frame so that they can fit properly which was a bit frustrating but worked out fine in the end. I thought it was a bit too blurry but I gave it as a present and they loved it and thought the quality was really good.

DO NOT BUY - Totally Disappointed -
DO NOT waste your money on this item IF you are looking for a digital picture frame to display slideshows with music. Their wonderful slideshow software only allows you to include 60 photos per slideshow. If you have more than 60 photos you will have to make more than one slideshow AND then you can't make the slideshows automatically play consecutively. If you don't use the software and simply view the photos in slideshow mode on the frame you can play them with music, HOWEVER, even if you take the music setting off of "repeat" and put it on "once", only one song will play over and over. I was told by a "technical support" person (who apparently knew little to nothing about Coby products) that he was "pretty sure" that even if you are in music mode the songs will not play consecutively and must be manually changed. So what is the point of having a music setting?! Also, I oredered this product in black and was sent the dark woodgrain color. Completely disappointed!!!!!

Beware 142 Picture Limit on older versions of frames! - Robert Usdin - Robbinsville, NJ USA
Nice frame, decent price, good screen.

However - beware the following, confirmed by Tricod's tech support:

There is a 142 picture limit in the file system. That is to say - the file system can only "see" 142 pictures at a time. The workaround for this is to divide the pictures up into folders of less that 142 on the memory card. However, you will still only be able to do a slide show of each folder, as the frame - no matter what - will not see more than 142 pictures at one time. If you can live with this limitation, go for it.

UPDATE: Tricod's tech support has been amazing and says that the new versions of the picture frame now support over 1000 pictures in a folder. They had me send my frames back and are sending me new frames. Kudos to a great support team for seeing a flaw and making it right for a customer!

I ordered this frame as a gift and I'm really impressed with the photo size and quality. It was easy to set up and the remote is a great feature. I love the size of the photos in this frame and they look great. Vertical shots are cropped a bit, but not so that they are awful. The only wrinkle in its operation is getting back to the slide show after the frame has been turned off. It's not automatic - or at least we haven't figured out how to make it automatic. Otherwise it is operating beautifully. I'm also pleased that it has a 1 year warranty. I had purchased a different brand at Christmas for the same person and that frame only lasted about 5 months before it just stopped working. Granted, they are on almost 24-7 but what good are they if you can't have them on?

I am so pleased with the frame that I just ordered one for myself.

I've ordered several frames from various manufacturers (Pandigital and Smartpants), but this one (by Portable USA) is the only one I ended up returning. The primary reason was the picture seemed washed out and there was dust between the glass and the LCD that couldn't be removed because of the way the frame is constructed. It made it look like there were pixels that were burnt out. The look of the frame itself is, of course, a matter of opinion, but this one seemed less sleek than most; that is too say the frame itself dominated the picture.

As for options, there were just a few. Many frames have a clock/timer function that turns the frame on and off but this one did not. For example, my frame at work turns on a few minutes before I get in and turns off just after I leave. The Pandigital frames allow you to have different times for the week and weekend, which is extra handy for an office situation (or even at home when you might want it the opposite of your office schedule). Not having this meant I would have to either leave it on all the time or remember to turn it on and off. It seemed odd to have to do this for the frame (you don't turn other pictures on your desk on and off).

It was OK as a frame but, for the price, I expected more.

I bought this for my wife's parents who are allergic to technology. They live in another state so we thought a digital frame might work nicely. This Kodak EX-811 seemed like a good deal. Other frames I've seen have monthly fees and that was a no go. I was a little weary of it based on other reviews.

I tested it out at my house on my network and the setup was relatively easy. At first it didn't recognize my router. Turning the frame on and off fixed this. After that I was able to connect easily. I set up an account on [...]. Again I had to turn it off and back on after entering my login info. After that I was easily able to navigate my albums and friends albums' from the frame.

Wi-fi setup at two other homes also worked after turning on and off the frame. It works with WPA2 although it is slow to navigate the onscreen keyboard with the remote.

To simplify the setup for the in-laws we deleted all local pictures and created a single album on [...]. All of the children share the account and add to the album when needed. We didn't want to complicate things by connecting it to their computer or the Kodak software.

A couple of things I didn't like were that it didn't seem like there was any type of order to the pictures. It was supposed to be by date, but I'm not sure what info it uses. I also would have liked to be able to do a slideshow across multiple albums at the same time. Otherwise you have to open each album separately.

Pros
- easy and stable connection to wi-fi
- simple to use interface
- remote control has a nice dock if you are not hanging up the frame.
- photos look excellent.

Cons
- had to turn the frame on and off during setup to get certain things recognized.
- 2 GB of space on Kodak Gallery for /year (I wish it was more space and free).
- lacks a lot of options for slide shows and sorting (of course this is also keeps it simple)

Overall, this is a great item at an excellent price. Great for in-laws, set it up with simple options and then leave it alone. My wife wants one for us now.

So far I really like the frame. Very sharp, clear picture and/but it is very BIG and heavy. Besides the fact that I liked the BIG size with high resolution VS the more common smaller sizes available with low resolution, I purchased this frame because the description states "You can change the look of the MV-1700 to fit your décor with any picture frame and matte combination of your choice"(the black was out of stock) but the instructions don't mention how or if you can do this and I do not see any obvious way to do it. I have emailed the company so I will wait to see if they respond. I was disappointed the frame does not have a typical monitor VESA mount so I can mount it on the wall with more confidence that it is going to stay in place (this is expensive and heavy you know). The electrical outlet I currently have the frame plugged intereferes with our TV picture so that is a concern. I will move to a different plug and see how that works. The grandkids will love it I am sure.

I recently purchased the 17" digital frame as a gift for my brother and his wife. He moved away recently to another state along with my two young nephews (1 and 3) for work, so I thought this would be a wonderful gift. This way, we could consolidate the family photos from both sides of the family and have them running all the time so that the kids would have something familiar to look at in their new environment and so that they would not forget our faces.

There are some flaws with this particular model. I have written to the company as well in hopes of some improvements:

1.) The black frame is actually a metal frame poorly painted black.

This means that when I opened the package and slipped off the plastic, the black paint was already starting to chip off to reveal silver underneath. I had not even had the frame five minutes before noticing this. Over time and with any movement, this chipping would be a big problem. It could look very cheap very quickly.

2.) There is no USB port.

Basically this means that the frame supports certain types of memory cards, but you cannot gather all of your photos in one central place, like say, on a removable drive and then have all the photos play from that drive by simply plugging it in. This is the case in most smaller versions. It is fine if you want to randomly put memory cards in there, but really, not many of us have an abundance of extra memory cards lying around and we mostly dump our photos onto our computers. I do happen to own a 2GB card, but trying to consolidate photos from different cameras, people, computers and formats onto my card is proving a very arduous task. Even cheaper, smaller versions have a usb port.

3.) You cannot select a random slide show.

You can play the slide show of the exact order of the photos on your memory card, but you cannot randomly show them. Half the fun of a digital frame is that it displays all of your photos randomly and it can capture your attention for hours. This frame always starts from the beginning with the same order as the card, and with 1000 photos to go through, it is a bit of a bore.

4.) The instruction manual is horrible.

The instruction manual is poorly written and very difficult to understand. It is possible that I am not as tech savvy as I should be, but I should be able to get through the basics easily. It is not user friendly, very poorly executed.

5.) There is no instruction on how to change the frame to fit the decor.

This frame touts "Changeable frame matches your décor (black frame included)" There are NO instructions on how to do this. There are also no explanations of this anywhere in the box. It should be plain and simple and should be in the instruction booklet. There is a link on the website if that helps anyone out there, but the fact that it is not even mentioned is so completely ridiculous.

Other than that, the photo quality is truly amazing. Nothing is distorted when enlarged to fit the screen. It played movies from a memory card with sound and I think it could be really wonderful. But, at 0 + to buy it, this thing should be of solid workmanship, easy to use and should have more features than it's many mini cousins out there. I will be returning my frame because of a pin-sized flaw in the center of the display that was easily noticed as soon as I turned it on for the first time.

What is really annoying is that I am having a very hard time finding another company who makes a frame this size. I liked the wall mounted ability because I thought it would be safer to be hung out of the reach of little hands, but the mounting ability of this frame doesn't give me any confidence. And, it is a heavy frame. I am not sure I want this hanging over my nephews' heads.

The frame is good, but not great. There are a lot of bugs to be worked out on this one. You will buy it and someone else will build a better mousetrap, with all the features you truly want in something that is so expensive.

I would wait on this one.

This is one of the more expensive frames but the picture quality and brightness is one of the worst I have seen. The first one I received was broke. The second one just has a dull picture. Very disapointed.

It is one of the best Digital Album Frame out there with large 12 inch display.. Takes alot of input, USB, SD, Flash Card etc.. Has many programmable features. In August, it stopped working completely; we called CTA and they said it would be fixed under warranty and gave us a RMA number. I was a afraid when buying this item, that something doesn't work the way it should due to the large amount of bad reviews on other digital frames. But fortunately, everything works perfect.

It has a great large screen with vivid colors, very clear, very sharp, just perfect!! The resolution is amazing. I have uploaded hundreds of pics in its 1GB memory and still has half capacity free. It has been working for over 2 months and still no problems at all.

The best of all, is that you don't have to crop or resize images, just copy your photos from the camera or PC and it's ready!!

The only thing I would add, is that every time it starts the slideshow, it starts on the first picture again, I would have prefered to continue on the last photo it showed when it slept.

I gave it to my mother as gift for mothers day and she love it.

I'm buying another one for my grandma!! This is the best choice I could have made.

At the time (Mother's Day '09) it was the best value because of the internal memory, screen size, resolution all in a nice looking frame. When we received it, it was everything I expected and more. I've been using the Cagic 8 digital frame for more than a month now. Having used others (Philips, Kodak, Pandigital among them) I was a bit jaded, and perhaps my expectations were low for all digital frames.

Cagic cured that. Let's start with the basics: it works - perfectly. No bells and whistles, no complicated menus. You turn it on, it shows your pictures, period. Go to the next one? Just touch the matting on the right. Previous? Touch on the left. Loading pictures? Just stick your memory card in and it pulls all the pictures in, scales them for the frame and tells you to take the card out. That's it. Could not be easier.

In terms of styling, there's nothing that holds a candle to it... how could there be? They use solid brushed aluminum and a 2 inch thick natural wood frame. The frame is so solid it is almost confusing at first... it looks and feels like a nice piece of furniture, not a digital frame. No plastic, no ugly doors or things sticking out... just a metal dome on the back with a support and a beautiful wood frame on the front. Quite literally everything else out on the market is some mix of plastic and acrylic... Cagic went the other way.

The bad: not much. It doesn't do audio and doesn't play video. If you want to use your digital frame to watch TV or listen to music, this won't work. If you're like 99% of the other people who just want it to display pictures, this is the one. Also, no WiFi. I'm mixed on that. What I've seen of WiFi on frames is so confusing and laden with layers, that I'd love for it to be easy. It appears Cagic just opted out of WiFi for now (though an e-mail to customer service got a quick response stating "don't be surprised to see an upgrade in the near future" for WiFi when I suggested it).

In short, if you want something that looks nice and just works, with no thought involved, this is it. I ordered a 2nd one for my office after using this one for a while.

I got this as a birthday present. I've been wanting a digital photo frame for a while, so I was really hoping for the best. But the quality of this product all around is poor. There's a giant ferrite bead at the end of the power cable that hangs just below the frame, so hanging the frame on the wall would be ugly. Copying photos to the device was painfully slow. The controls for the device were confusing and went from ultra responsive one second to non responsive the next. The pixels were blurry and big enough to count by hand. The users manual didn't give any indication on what the resolution was, so I could at least get the pictures into a close enough size to get better quality out of them. The aspect ratio made tall pictures display almost postage stamp size. And when I tried deleting photos through the device interface, it froze several times. I'm going to be returning it right away.

This is the first digital frame that I purchased. Uploaded pictures of kids for parents. Then it got frustrating. Cannot be used horizontally because heads get cut off. And you cannot nudge the photos down so the heads don't get cut off. Walgreens online photo shop even allows that! So vertical is the only format that can realistically be used. But that means that you have to manually rotate every other photo vertically. Sounds simple, but not! You rotate the photo, rotate, rotate and finally get it right, then hit "Slideshow" to set the rotation, and half of the time it goes back to the original format! Very frustrating. And even with the remote right up to the sensor, it still barely works. This is the worst piece of crap I have ever seen. Now I have to manually delete 170+ photos before I can return it. Crap!

Suggestions to the idiotic makers:
Fix the sensor
Make it a touchscreen
Let the user nudge the photos placement with the arrow keys
Make an option easily rotate all horizontal photos to vertical or vice versa
Reference PowerPoint slideshows for ease of reordering slides

Idiots! Make a good product will you. Otherwise what good are you!

Bought this frame for my Mom and her husband for Christmas. I was so pleasantly surprised at the great image quality! I'm a photographer and very picky about image quality. My images looked fabulous on this frame! Seriously, I was so surprised and thrilled!

I got it for 0 on Black Friday. I honestly wasn't expecting much, but it left me wanting this frame for myself (I'd even pay full price!!) and of course I can't find one in stock anywhere now. They must be a huge hit.

The size is just perfect, the black frame and white matting are classic and attractive, setup is a breeze (another pleasant surprise - my husband and I are tech savvy, but my Mom and her husband are not, but even they should be able to add pictures without issue - just drag and drop), the remote is handy, it saves your preferences when turned off and turned back on... my list of likes goes on and on, and I can't say I have a single dislike.

I definitely recommend this frame and I hope I can buy another for myself soon!

I love the software that came with this frame--it's easy to copy lots of pictures, and it automatically changes the resolution for sharp pictures with minimum memory storage. But, if you copy a whole folder, it reorganizes the order of the pictures unless the numbers all have the same number of digits (eg. 001, 0002 to 0100 etc.) So, if your pictures are using the default numbers assigned by Microsoft software when renaming them (eg. 1, 2 ....10...100 etc.) then all the pictures beginning with one will be together (eg. 1, 10, 11...100, 101,)then you will see the series two photos (2, 20, 21....200) etc. The work-around is to load those photos individually or in sequential groups instead of copying a full folder. It takes a lot longer, though. If you don't care what order the pictures are in, then go for it! This has A LOT of built in memory, which is great--especially when you optimize the photos, it really could hold up to 2000 photos. Nice value for the price.

not worth the money -- poor picture quality - persianbride - USA
The picture quality, resolution, brightness, etc. is not sharp and cannot be adjusted. I have a top-of-the-line digital camera and the pictures are perfectly fine, by the way. Also, if you want music to play while the pictures are being displayed, there aren't any already built in and you can only download any selections you like from an mp3 player. Many of us don't have Ipods, etc. these days for various reasons, and to be honest, I feel I've been ripped off with this particular model. There are much better ones for the same price where the picture quality is better, or the resolution can be changed and many come with some music choices already downloaded, although maybe not what everyone is looking for. Fortunately for me, I did buy this frame on sale (with add'l coupons) for but I still think I threw my money away and will return it to the store for a refund or upgrade! Charging an astronomical price of 9 for this is absolutely ridiculous!

I got this for my Mom last year on Mother's day, and boy did I impress.

It's simple enough to use that she could get all the pictures on there herself (at age 56), and all her friends were extremely jealous. They now know that their sons don't love them. And my Mother raised her son much better than they did.

So far, everything is fine when connected to my husband's PC. However, the frame is very much not workable on my Mac, which stores all our family photos. Disappointing, particularly when it specifically advertises being mac compatible.
